What Happens When Your Wise Card Is Declined
If you see "Your card has been declined" or the transaction simply doesn't go through when paying online, the issue could be on Wise's side or the merchant's side.
Wise card โ a Mastercard or Visa debit โ supports online payments, but requires proper account configuration.
Why It Happens
Online payments are disabled. Wise card settings let you enable or disable different transaction types. Online payments may be turned off by default.
Insufficient funds in the required currency. Wise charges the balance in the transaction currency. If your balance is in euros but the payment is in dollars, auto-conversion may not trigger if funds are insufficient.
3D Secure not completed. Some merchants require 3DS confirmation. If the notification wasn't received or was missed, the payment is declined.
Merchant blocks Wise BIN. Some services (especially gaming and streaming) block cards based on BIN range.
Daily limit exceeded. The Wise card has daily spending limits.
Card not activated. The physical Wise card requires activation before first use.
Account frozen or restricted. If the Wise account is under review, the card may be temporarily blocked.
Step-by-Step Fix
Step 1 โ Check card settings
In the Wise app, go to "Cards" โ select your card โ "Settings." Make sure the "Online transactions" toggle is on.
Step 2 โ Check your balance
Ensure you have enough funds in the required currency. Top up the account or enable auto-conversion.
Step 3 โ Check limits
In the same card settings, check daily and monthly limits. Increase them if needed.
Step 4 โ Check 3DS
Make sure Wise notifications are enabled and the app is installed on the device you're using to pay.
Step 5 โ Try a different browser or device
Sometimes the issue is specific to a browser or cached data.
Step 6 โ Use an alternative card
If the merchant blocks Wise's BIN, use a virtual card with a different BIN. Marix cards have a BIN accepted by most online merchants.
