Seller changed the password on my Xbox account-share โ what to do
One of the more alarming moments with an account-share: you try to sign in a day or a week later, and Microsoft says "That Microsoft account doesn't exist" or "Your password is incorrect". The seller has likely changed the password or deleted the account.
What you do next depends on whether you set Home Xbox on the first sign-in.
Scenario A: Home Xbox was set โ game survives
If on day one you completed our key step Settings โ General โ Personalization โ My home Xbox โ Make this my home Xbox, you're fine:
- The game runs offline under your personal Xbox account โ the seller's password is no longer needed.
- Turn on the console, switch to your profile.
- My games & apps โ Full library โ launch the game.
Caveats:
- Multiplayer requires online license check โ may stop working. Single-player remains available.
- Updates sometimes prompt for the seller's account โ skip if not critical.
- Every ~5 years Xbox rechecks Home Xbox licenses โ by then you'll have finished the game.
If the game launches โ there's nothing else to do. The seller didn't actually lock you out.
Scenario B: Home Xbox not set โ recovery plan
If you never set Home Xbox, access to the game is fully gone. There are still options.
Step 1. Don't panic, don't break anything
- Don't try to "recover" the password through Microsoft โ it's a ToS violation, you could make things worse for yourself.
- Don't open a support ticket with Xbox from your own name โ they'll see the account isn't yours.
Step 2. Contact the seller / reseller
- Open the chat with the seller or reseller (Marix, another marketplace).
- State the facts: "bought an account with [game], can't sign in, password doesn't match".
- Attach a screenshot of the error and your order/receipt.
A solid reseller (Marix, established platforms) will hand you a replacement package or a new account within minutes to hours.
Step 3. If the seller was a random Telegram person
This is the bad case: with no replacement guarantee, you risk losing both the money and the game. Possible moves:
- File a chargeback through your payment method โ if it's a card and within 30 days.
- Open a dispute in the seller's Telegram channel โ if they care about reputation, they might replace.
But the statistics are grim: about 30% of private sellers "burn" accounts after the first month. So never buy shares from random Telegram channels without a track record.
How to protect yourself next time
| Action | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Set Home Xbox | First 10 minutes after sign-in | Offline access forever |
| Don't launch the game online as seller | After Home Xbox is set | Fewer traces in seller's account |
| Download the game fully on day one | Immediately | No dependency on online |
| Never type the seller's password on PC/phone | Never | Less chance of compromising the account |
Where to get help
