Xbox Gift Card Currency Doesn't Match Account Region — How to Fix
You bought a USD Xbox Gift Card hoping to credit it to your Turkey account — Microsoft replies "This code can't be redeemed in your region." Same story with a TRY code on a US account. This is by design: Xbox Gift Cards are tightly bound to one region's currency and do not convert between regions.
Why this happens
- A Gift Card is issued in one currency for one region. USD Gift Card → US only. TRY → Turkey only. ARS → Argentina only. BRL → Brazil only. EUR → Eurozone countries (UK is separate as GBP).
- Microsoft doesn't convert currency. Even if redemption were allowed, TRY can't credit a USD wallet — they're separate currency buckets inside Microsoft Wallet.
- Only Game Pass subscription codes are "global." Wallet gift cards are always region-specific. Subscription codes (Game Pass Ultimate, Game Pass for PC, EA Play) sometimes come as global or multi-region.
- Resellers sometimes ship the wrong currency. A buyer sees "Xbox Gift Card $50" and doesn't check the currency — turns out it's USD for a US account, but their account is Turkey.
How to fix it
- Before buying, check your account region.
account.microsoft.com→ Your info → Country/region. - Match the Gift Card strictly to the region currency. Turkey → TRY, Argentina → ARS, US → USD, Eurozone → EUR, UK → GBP, Brazil → BRL.
- If you already bought the wrong card, three options: (1) switch your account region to match the card currency, (2) redeem on another account of yours with the right region, (3) resell the card to someone whose account matches.
- Switching account region:
account.microsoft.com→ Your info → Country/region → Edit. But remember: only once every 90 days, and wallet balance does not transfer. - If you already redeemed onto the wrong region — the funds are stuck. Microsoft does not refund redeemed Gift Cards. That's why step 1 (verify region first) is critical.
