What Is Payment Manual Review
Manual review is a process where a merchant's or payment processor's security team personally examines a transaction to confirm its legitimacy. Unlike automated filters, a human makes the final call during manual review.
Manual review triggers when the anti-fraud engine cannot conclusively classify a transaction โ the risk score falls in the "gray zone" between automatic approval and automatic rejection.
You may see a status of "Pending," "Under review," or "Payment held for review" instead of the standard confirmation.
Why a Payment Is Sent for Manual Review
Unusual transaction circumstances. The IP doesn't match the card's region, unusually large amount, new account with a big purchase.
High-risk product category. Electronics, airline tickets, gift cards, and cryptocurrency face closer scrutiny due to higher fraud rates.
Data mismatch. The name on the card doesn't match the name in the merchant's account.
First large purchase with the merchant. A new customer with a big order is a standard review trigger.
Multiple declines before a successful transaction. Even if the last attempt succeeded, the preceding failures can initiate a review.
How Long Does Manual Review Take
| Merchant / Processor | Typical review time |
|---|---|
| Large marketplaces (Amazon, eBay) | 1โ4 hours |
| Airlines | 2โ24 hours |
| Gaming platforms | 1โ12 hours |
| Financial services | 1โ5 business days |
| Small businesses | Unpredictable, 1โ48 hours |
What Information You Need to Provide
If the merchant requests additional verification:
Step 1. Respond to the merchant's request quickly. Any delay on your end extends the review.
Step 2. Prepare documents. Commonly requested: a photo ID, a photo of the card (number covered, showing only the last 4 digits), a screenshot of a bank statement or billing address confirmation.
Step 3. Explain the purchase context. If the purchase is unusual, briefly explain why you're making it (gift, business purchase, etc.).
Step 4. Check your email. The merchant may send a verification request by email โ don't miss it.
Step 5. Don't create duplicate orders. Duplicate orders complicate the review and may result in both being cancelled.
FAQ
Does manual review guarantee approval? No. After manual review, the transaction may be either approved or declined โ it depends entirely on the reviewer's decision.
Can money be charged before the review is complete? Often yes โ funds are frozen (authorized) but the actual charge only occurs after approval. If the transaction is declined, the hold is automatically released.
Can I speed up the review? Yes โ proactively contact the merchant's support team, provide all requested documents as quickly as possible, and reference your order number.
Marix cards carry a clean history, which reduces the likelihood of transactions being flagged for manual review.
