What does this error mean?
When Stripe declines your card with the message "prepaid_card" or "Your card does not support this type of purchase," the merchant has deliberately restricted prepaid card payments. This is not a technical glitch โ it is an intentional configuration on the merchant's side.
Why does Stripe block prepaid cards?
Stripe gives merchants the ability to filter payments by card funding type. Prepaid cards are commonly blocked for several reasons:
- Fraud risk. Prepaid cards are anonymous and frequently associated with carding attacks and chargebacks.
- Refund complications. Refunding a prepaid card is technically harder, especially if the card has expired by the time a refund is issued.
- Subscription requirements. Services with recurring billing need a card that will reliably carry a balance โ a prepaid card can run out.
- Regulatory compliance. Certain industries must verify payer identity, and prepaid cards make that difficult.
- BIN identification. Stripe detects the card type from the first digits of the card number (the BIN). If your BIN is categorized as "prepaid," the payment is declined before it even reaches your bank.
What can you do?
- Ask the merchant. Some merchants can manually whitelist a specific card or offer an alternative payment method.
- Use a debit or credit card. These pass Stripe's card-type checks without prepaid restrictions.
- Try PayPal or another digital wallet. Many merchants accept alternative payment methods that bypass card-type filtering.
- Use a Marix virtual card. Marix virtual cards carry a BIN that is not classified as prepaid, allowing them to pass filters that reject standard prepaid cards.
FAQ
Do all Stripe merchants block prepaid cards? No. It is an optional setting. Many merchants accept any card type. The block is a deliberate choice made by individual merchants, not a Stripe-wide rule.
Is there any way around a prepaid card block? Not technically โ the block happens on the merchant's side before the transaction reaches the issuer. Your only option is to use a different card type.
How is a Marix virtual card different from a regular prepaid card? Marix virtual cards are issued under a BIN that Stripe does not identify as prepaid. This lets them clear filters that block standard prepaid instruments.
If you need a card that works where ordinary prepaid cards are rejected, try Marix virtual cards โ they're accepted by the vast majority of international services and platforms.
