What Is "Unsupported Card Brand"
The error "unsupported card brand" (also "we don't accept this card type" or "card type not supported") means the merchant or payment gateway does not support the card network your card belongs to.
Every card belongs to a specific card scheme (also called card brand or card network): Visa, Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay, MIR, JCB, Discover, and others. Merchants only integrate processing for the networks they have contracted with through their gateway.
Which Card Brands Are Most Often Not Accepted
MIR. Russia's national payment system, active in a limited number of countries. After 2022, MIR acceptance abroad dropped sharply โ most international stores and gateways no longer support this network.
UnionPay. The world's largest card network by card count, but acceptance outside China and Asia is inconsistent. Many European and American online stores do not support UnionPay.
American Express. Amex has wider acceptance than UnionPay or MIR, but still lags behind Visa and Mastercard โ some smaller merchants do not support it due to higher interchange fees.
JCB and Discover. Japanese and American niche networks with limited acceptance outside their home markets.
Local-only cards. Cards from local banks without an international BIN (issued only for domestic use) cannot be processed by foreign gateways.
Why Merchants Don't Support Every Brand
- Cost of integration. Each additional card network requires a separate agreement and technical integration.
- Transaction volume. Small businesses see no benefit in connecting networks with low demand.
- Sanctions and regulations. After 2022, many gateways disabled MIR support at regulatory direction.
What to Do When Your Card Is Not Accepted
Try Visa or Mastercard. These two networks are accepted in virtually every country. If you have a card on either network, use it.
Use a Marix virtual card. Marix issues Visa and Mastercard-based cards with a European billing address โ accepted at the vast majority of international stores.
PayPal or Apple/Google Pay. Digital wallets can use your local card as a funding source and process the payment through a supported network.
Cryptocurrency. Some services accept crypto without reliance on card networks.
Contact the merchant's support. Sometimes the merchant can offer an alternative payment method (bank transfer, invoice).
FAQ
Is a UnionPay co-brand the same as a regular UnionPay card? No. UnionPay cards with a Visa or Mastercard co-brand (e.g., UnionPay/Visa) are accepted wherever that co-brand network is accepted. A pure UnionPay card without a co-brand has much more limited acceptance.
Can MIR be used abroad via a digital wallet? In some countries (Turkey, Armenia, UAE) MIR is still accepted directly. In most other countries, it is not. Digital wallets will not help if they are funded by a MIR card.
Why did my bank issue a card that isn't accepted abroad? MIR was originally designed for the domestic market. Some banks offer a "MIR with international application" product โ a co-badge card that in some situations functions as Mastercard โ but coverage is limited.
Need a card that's accepted everywhere? Marix offers Visa/Mastercard virtual cards with a European billing address for seamless payments worldwide.
