What Is a Prepaid Card
A prepaid card holds a pre-loaded amount of money. It is not linked to a bank account with a credit limit or transaction history. Examples: store top-up cards, one-time virtual cards, gift cards with a balance.
Why Stripe Declines Them

3. Merchant policy. Services like OpenAI, ChatGPT, Adobe, and others explicitly block prepaid cards in their Stripe settings — to prevent abuse of free trial periods.
4. Technical limitations for subscriptions. Subscription services need a reliable recurring payment source. A prepaid card can run out of funds or be abandoned, making it unsuitable for recurring charges.

How Stripe Identifies Card Type
Stripe uses the BIN (Bank Identification Number) — the first 6–8 digits of the card number. The BIN database contains:
- Country of issue
- Card type (debit / credit / prepaid)
- Issuing bank
- Payment network
When you enter a card number, Stripe instantly queries the BIN database to determine whether the card is prepaid. If it is — the transaction is declined before even reaching the bank.
What to Use Instead of Prepaid
