What Is a Prepaid Card
A prepaid card holds a pre-loaded amount of money. It is not linked to a bank account with a credit limit or transaction history. Examples: store top-up cards, one-time virtual cards, gift cards with a balance.
Why Stripe Declines Them
Stripe and merchants using Stripe may block prepaid cards for several reasons:
1. Chargebacks are harder to process. If a customer disputes a transaction, Stripe must issue a refund. With prepaid cards, this is more complex โ the balance may already be spent and the card abandoned.
2. Anonymity and fraud risk. Prepaid cards have historically been associated with higher fraud rates because they are harder to trace to a specific individual.
3. Merchant policy. Services like OpenAI, ChatGPT, Adobe, and others explicitly block prepaid cards in their Stripe settings โ to prevent abuse of free trial periods.
4. Technical limitations for subscriptions. Subscription services need a reliable recurring payment source. A prepaid card can run out of funds or be abandoned, making it unsuitable for recurring charges.

How Stripe Identifies Card Type
Stripe uses the BIN (Bank Identification Number) โ the first 6โ8 digits of the card number. The BIN database contains:
- Country of issue
- Card type (debit / credit / prepaid)
- Issuing bank
- Payment network
When you enter a card number, Stripe instantly queries the BIN database to determine whether the card is prepaid. If it is โ the transaction is declined before even reaching the bank.
What to Use Instead of Prepaid
Virtual cards come in different types. The key distinction is not "virtual vs. physical" โ it's "prepaid vs. debit/credit." Marix issues virtual cards classified as debit in the BIN database, not prepaid. That's why they work in places where standard prepaid cards are declined.
FAQ
How do I find out if my card is prepaid? Check your banking app โ the card type is usually shown there. You can also verify at bincheck.io or a similar service by entering the first 6 digits of your card number.
Is Stripe Radar the same as BIN blocking? No. Stripe Radar is a behavior-based fraud detection system. BIN blocking is a separate mechanism configured at the merchant level.
Do all Marix virtual cards work with Stripe? Yes. Marix cards are issued with a debit BIN and are accepted by Stripe โ which sets them apart from most one-time prepaid cards.
Get a non-prepaid virtual debit card on Marix โ works with Stripe, OpenAI, Midjourney, and other services.
